How To Increase Your Bench Press

How does one increase the bench press? That is a question I often ask myself while pounding the steel at the local gym. It seems that in the beginning, I increased the weight more often than I do now. It feels like I am constantly fighting for one or two more repetitions than I was able to do last time. Some days I win, some days I don't.

In a recent blog post, retired professional bodybuilder, Kevin Levrone, shared a valuable tip on how we can increase our bench press. As a part of his NFL Combine Challenge, a number of us are working to increase the 225 lb bench press by summer's end. For me, I need to successfully press more than 12 times. Can I get 20 reps, I ask myself?

To accomplish this worthy goal, I will need to shock and awe my pectorals into growth. Most of my workouts consist of 4 sets with 10-12 repetitions. According to Levrone, this needs to change.

Hardcore Workout At Clayton Fitness With Dawn Sutherland

On Friday, when I should have been doing my own leg workout, I fell upon an opportunity to record Dawn Sutherland as she prepares for an upcoming bodybuilding show in October. At first, it was just going to be a quick shot of her doing deadlifts, but it turned out including much more.

By the end of the day, I watched Dawn work it out with Tracy and Jamie Olsen Langdon during a hardcore routine of tire, sledgehammer, and sled. Let me just add, it's not for the faint of heart.

In the video below, I capture just a few moments of what its like working out at Clayton Fitness. Enjoy!

My Relative Disappeared On FountierVille, How Do I Get Them Back?

The popular Facebook game FrontierVille is about a character that explores the wild wild west and settles on a plot of land. One of the challenges, after building the homestead, is to get married and eventually have a child. At level 19, I have both a wife and a daughter. Unfortunately, a strange thing recently happened, my daughter disappeared.

At first, I allowed my natural parenting imagination to run wild. Did she get eaten by a bear, fox, or snake? Did she fall in the fire or drown in the lake? Did she head into town, run off and elope? Where could she be for goodness sake?

It was then that I learned a secret to bringing lost family members back home. Let me share it with you.

NFL Combine Challenge: 3-Cone Drill & 20-Yard Shuttle

The other day, I convinced my friend Michael Steele to come out and help me finish Kevin Levrone's NFL Combine Challenge. According to instructions provided, we are to time ourselves on seven drills and record our beginning statistics for future use. Then, after a series of exercises, we will come back near the end of this summer to test ourselves again. Will we be better, faster, and more agile than we are today? That's the question.

In the video below, I finish both the 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle. Overall, it was a blast to make. To view my other NFL Combine Challenge videos, follow these links: 225 lb bench pressvertical jumpbroad jump40-yard dash)

In the future, I may end up investing in a pair of cleats. With the grass sort of wet and slippery, it was difficult to really get into the dirt and turn corners. Enough excuses, enjoy the show!

Writing The Dissertation One Blog At A Time

In this entry, I take a deeper look into my love language and its effects on blogging. Then, I look at how blogging can help me finish the dissertation.
----------------------------------------------------
I love writing blogs.

Come to think of it, I love doing things that garner an immediate reaction from people.

This may explain why I chose music as my undergraduate major and web development as a career. In each case, I got to create something that was easily demonstrated. Be it on stage, radio, or in a blog, the immediate reaction from an audience was, and still is, addictive.

Similarly, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter provide an audience that is quick to respond. It is this very approval of status updates, pictures, and videos that keeps me going. How do I know? Why, it's my love language, of course.

Love Lanaguage
Love language? you ask. Yes, according to a 30-second quiz, I have come to realize that I respond most to 'words of affirmation.' Gary Chapman explains:
Actions don’t always speak louder than words. If this (words of affirmation) is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important—hearing the reasons behind that love sends your spirits skyward. Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten.
While the author gears the message toward personal relationships between singles, couples, and families, I have taken this information to better understand myself in other areas.

Knowing that I hunger for adoration and acceptance in all things, there is little surprise that I am, as a result, motivated to do things that has the potential to win approval from others. Although, one must understand that I often march to the beat of a different drummer. I appreciate words of affirmation for things I do well, not for what others tell me to do. I am no pushover.

Equipped with this basic and personal understanding, I realize why the dissertation has become such a monumental task. Besides the length of pages and depth of research required, the most pressing matter is that nobody will see it until after it is all said and done. That is just too long to wait.

The Plan
In order to complete the dissertation, I need to do something that will progress the research and writing while offering immediate feedback and approval. Yes, I love my mentor and committee, but I need feedback and collaboration on a more granular level. Say, on the level of a blog.

Read
The first step is to continue reading journal articles, books, and other literature to develop my ideas.

Write
As I read, I will incorporate my thoughts and ideas into blog posts that focus on different elements of my study. Because I have a tendency to time box my day, completing smaller papers on a daily basis makes the 'elephant' easier to swallow.

Engage
Blog posts will house my most current and relevant thoughts on organizational commitment in the non-profit organization. Individuals who share a passion for the topic may chime in and offer additional reading or perspectives that I haven't considered. Hopefully, this engagement will aid in a deeper analysis and comprehensive report.

Adapt
Finally, I can take advantage of Blogger's site search to identify information and resources as the need arises. Not only will I have my own thoughts, but I would also have at my disposal the collective intelligence of others.

What do you think? Am I missing something? Is there something I'm not considering? Is this a risky proposition? Is it worth doing? Has anyone done this successfully? I would love to read your feedback on this idea. Let's talk about it in the comment section below.

What I Have Learned About Online Radio After 44 Episodes

Michael Render, Derek Brinson, and I have just finished our 44th episode of "Room 3026 Live" on BlogTalkRadio. To my surprise, today marks our two-month anniversary and I thought it would be helpful to share all that I've learned about hosting an online radio show. Hopefully, when I look back over the next two months, we will see continued growth and maturity.

Be Prepared
Each day, I spend an hour or more reading the RSS feeds in Google. The goal is to identify the latest news and understand where the buzz is originating. Some days, there are plenty of topics available for discussion and other days, nothing. From the very beginning, I knew that an hour was a long time to talk if we had nothing to say. Therefore, I make it a point to pull at least 13 interesting stories in an effort to give the team something to build upon.

FrontierVille: How To Complete Building Projects

On Saturday, I finished a blog post entitled, "My First Look At Facebook's FrontierVille" and then on Sunday I finished another article called, "FrontierVille: Managing The Trees." Today, I want to finish answering Marianne's question, "How on earth are people completing these buildings?"

If you're not yet playing the popular FrontierVille, let me explain that buildings are a necessary part of the game. In order to complete certain challenges, users must purchase and construct buildings.

At level 15, I have successfully completed a cabin, barn, and general store; However, I am still waiting to finish the inn and school house.

FrontierVille: Managing The Trees

Yesterday, I wrote My First Look At Facebook's FrontierVille. The post provides a basic introduction into the game many are starting to play. Fans of Zynga's FarmVille will find it has plenty of sowing and reaping, but now users are asked to complete individual challenges. My favorite task so far is to prepare the land for my wife and raise a family. At level 15, I just had my first child.

Last night, my friend Marianne asked a few questions about the game, one of which I plan to answer here. She asked, "Why do some people have so many trees?"

My First Look At Facebook's FrontierVille

A few weeks back, I decided to try a popular Facebook game entitled FarmVille. I kept reading stories about the money Zynga was making off its popular lineup. Did I mention the number of FarmVille invitations and gifts I received?

At first, FarmVille reminded me of another game, the Sims. Like the Sims, I am given a plot of land and told to build upon it. I was encouraged to invite my friends, of which many are already playing.

The problem with FarmVille is that I found it to be extremely boring. I spent much of my day planting seeds and harvesting them. Sure, I could buy farm animals, buildings, and other decorations, but why am I doing this, again?
