Where do I begin?
It was one of the most difficult emails that I've had to write.
For more than a year, I told myself that I would finish this dissertation, but I failed to do what was necessary. I stopped calling my mentor, stopped writing the proposal, and just hoped for the best. As a result, the University of Phoenix un-enrolled me from the doctoral program and released me from my mentor and committee. I wasn't surprised.
After months of nightmares and unfulfilled self-promises, I decided to pull myself together. I scheduled time to focus on my education. For me, this meant writing "THE LETTER."
"Hello." I wrote.
Is that too relaxed? I asked myself.
As I sat there on my laptop, my mind raced. I needed to tell her how important she is and how miserable I felt for letting her down. See, my mentor believed in me. She told me that I could finish this race, but instead of fulfilling that vision, I jumped ship.
For more than a year, I failed to write her. For all I know, she was angry, hurt, disappointed, and ultimately done with me. How would I ever finish this dissertation without her?
Turning back to the email, there was much that I wanted to say, but feared it would fall on deaf ears.
"Forget the doubt, Damond, and just write!" That's the final instruction I gave myself before composing a short, and quite humbled, request.
In 15 minutes, I finished an email that apologized for trying to go it alone. I told her that I needed her, but could understand if she didn't feel the same.
It was one of the most difficult emails that I've had to write. It was even harder to push the "Send" button.
After a half dozen read-throughs, I let it go.
Would she respond? What would she think? Is it too late? Where do I go from here?
The Response
In less than an hour, her name appeared in my box. She had responded.
I wanted to know what she wrote, but I'm not sure I was ready to hear bad news.
Slowly, I moved the mouse over the title and clicked.
She began with, "Hi Damond: It is so nice to hear from you, and hope all is going well with you and the family."
She continued her reply with an explanation. She told me that the University removed me from her list and thus assumed that I asked for another mentor to guide me on the journey.
Finally, she ended with, "keep your head up high and remember, I will always be here to guide and help you."
Like a jolt of lighting piercing the air, excitement raced through my body. "There is still hope for me. Yeeeeeesssssss!" I yelled in the quite space of my room.
With my mentor back on board, I turn my attention to the University of Phoenix.

Under the slow-carb diet, I ate lean proteins, legumes, and vegetables four times per day. At night, I consumed two glasses of red wine. On Saturday, I cheated and ate whatever I wanted.
"How did I do?" you ask. Well, the diet produced positive results, although I never lost the 20 pounds Tim claimed I would lose. In fact, even after 60 days on the diet, my weight only fluctuated between 7 and 10 pounds.
On the bright side, I consistently lost inches around my waist, hips, and chest. For that, I am pleased. However, I'm interested in making some considerable changes. For me, that came with limited amounts of carbs.
Meals
For the simplicity of communicating my strategy, I've looked to the Atkins diet for guidance. Essentially, I'm eating proteins, fats, and vegetables. Below is an example of my normal day.
Meat
Chicken breast: I eat this at least once per day.
Eggs: For breakfast, I scramble 6 whole eggs.
Ground Beef: When I eat ground beef, I cook 80/20.
Steak: I love a good steak. During the course of a week, I probably eat one or two ribeyes off the grill.
Fish: I really enjoy a fat salmon. If I can afford it, I need to do salmon more often.
Vegetables
Broccoli: I'm eating a lot of fresh broccoli.
Cauliflower: When I'm not eating broccoli, I'm eating fresh cauliflower.
Note: I am not cooking my vegetables this week. Where I have control over the way vegetables are prepared, I choose raw over microwaved. I like fresh broccoli best.
Dairy
Cheese: One of the biggest differences is the addition of cheese. I eat cheese with my scrambled eggs and I love it.
Beverages
Water: This week, I didn't do a very good job drinking a gallon per day. I probably ended up drinking about 1/2 to 3/4 gallons.
Red wine: I'm drinking around 2 glasses per day.
Coffee: I'm drinking about one mug per day.
Supplements
Multi-vitamins: I have a bottle of one-a-days, which I haven't been very good about taking.
Fish Oil: The bottle recommends three pills per day, with meals. I probably only take about one, if I remember.
Physical Activities
Thanks to my job, I walk across campus for a total of 30 minutes per day.
Statistics
I am very pleased with the progress that I've been making these past few weeks. I have continued to lose inches around my waist, hips, stomach, and chest. Additionally, I finally broke the 250 lbs barrier.
Below is the complete report for my measurements. In the parentheses, I am reporting changes, followed by the total loss since I started (this week | total).
Weight: 249 lbs (-4 lbs | - 11 lbs)
Height: 6' 2"
Age: 36
Body Fat: 15.7% (2% | -11.8% )
Chest: 42.75" (2.25" | -3.25")
Waist: 41.25" (-1.0" | -2.0")
Arms: 17.0" (-25" | -0.25")
Shoulders: 51.75" (-1" | -1.50")
Forearms: 14" (-0" | -0")
Neck: 16" (-0" | -0")
Hips: 44.25" (-0.75" | -2.00")
Thighs: 26" (-0" | -0")
Calves: 18" (-0" | -0")
Stomach: 43.25" (-0.75" | -1.75")
Observations
Since I moved to a low-carb diet, which is under 20 grams per day, I find the weight and inches are falling off more rapidly than when I was doing a slow-carb diet. I enjoy eating steaks, cheese, whole eggs, and chicken. While there are moments where I grow tired of meat, it never lasts long.
Tip: Eat your veggies (fiber) and drink plenty of water. The first week on the diet, I was on the verge of constipation. Thankfully, I upped both and things have been fine ever since.
Final Thoughts
This week, I've done a good job staying away from carbs. Moving forward, I need to focus on cooking enough chicken the night before so I have something for lunch. Also, it is important that I drink as close to a gallon of water a day as possible.
Feedback

Earlier this morning, I packed my bags as I normally do.
Laptop? Check.
Lunch? Check.
Gym bag? Check.
Merrily I walked out the door and into my car. It was practically 15 minutes later when I realized I'd forgotten to pack my USB charging cord. I knew exactly where it was, but couldn't risk arriving to work late. As a result of my circumstances, I decided to press on. Although, in the back of my mind, I seriously wondered if I could make it through an entire day with no charger.
As a quick reminder, I am the proud owner of a Samsung Epic 4G, my cellular service is with Sprint, and I use my phone regularly. To my advantage, I replaced the standard 1500 mAh for the 3500 mAh battery. Had I left home with the 1500 mAh battery, I would never have made it through lunch.
The Countdown
This particular morning, I woke around 4:38 am. Getting out of bed, I disconnected the phone from its charger, thus beginning the countdown.
By 7 am, I checked my e-mail, RSS feeds, Facebook, and Twitter numerous times. In addition, I checked-in on Foursquare, took a picture of the building as I walked up, and shared a number of interesting stories with my friends.
By 10 am, over 5 hours without a charge, I took the first picture documenting my progress. At this point, I felt confident that I could push another few hours with ease.
By 2 pm, I had more than half a battery left on the phone. While not heavily used, I took a few phone calls and checked my friends' activities on Facebook and Twitter.
By 5 pm, over 12 hours without a charge, I burned only 50% of the battery's juice. During the previous 3 hours, I downloaded Amazon's AppStore, checked e-mail, updated feeds on Twitter and Facebook, and later acquired the free copy of Angry Bird's Rio. Due to a slow connection, the download and subsequent installation of the AppStore and Angry Birds took a lot of juice.
By 6:48 pm, as I was leaving work to head home, my battery dropped down to 1/4 power. Knowing my time was growing slim, I made a few quick phone calls, checked Google Reader, and sent out some text messages.
At 7:29 pm, which is well over the 14 hour mark, my phone's low battery notification came on. At this point, it was just a matter of time before the phone automatically shut down.
Final Thought
Looking back over the day, I'd say that I used the phone as much as I would on a normal day. Much of my activity often includes engaging in social media, taking pictures, checking-in, reading RSS feeds, and sharing an SMS or two.
To my surprise, the Samsung extended battery for the Epic 4G performed exceedingly well. It allowed me to do what I normally do without being tethered all day to a cord. I like that freedom.
For the amount of money that I paid for the battery, I believe it was around $60 at the Sprint Store, I'm pleased with the time it gave me. The Samsung Galaxy S extended battery is definitely an item I'd recommend. As a result, my smartphone experience has just gotten better.
What about you? What are your experiences with the Samsung Epic 4G extended battery? Would you recommend it?

The house was dark and quiet, yet I could hear the birds singing cheerfully outside my window. While the kids still slept in their beds, I decided that I would take some time to peruse Facebook.
The average day is often a busy one. As a result, there never seems to be enough time to explore my friends' daily contributions.
This morning was a little different than most. I decided to take an hour and just stroll through a handful of profiles. It was interesting. I got to see a glimpse of their life. Pictures captured fun times with kids, friends, and family. The updates revealed where their minds had been. It was kind of magical, if you slowed down enough to see it.
"Where am I going with this?" you ask. Simply put, I am reminded of how important the small things really are. When I take a look around me, I see how participating in a bunch of small things can eventually become the "Big Thing." Below are just a few examples:
A Simple Paragraph
I often think about how much work goes into writing a dissertation or book. At first glance, it is a daunting task. However, if you think about the book as nothing more than a collection of simple paragraphs, then it doesn't seem that bad.
A Short Update
Building and maintaining relationships with others can be very time consuming, especially if you know a lot of people. Fortunately, with social media, we can do our part by sharing updates and pictures throughout the day. Consider the idea of lifestreaming, which is made up of short updates, thoughts, and ideas. Add a picture and it's done.
A Single Meal
Creating an outstanding body won't happen by accident. To achieve this goal, one needs to start with a decision to eat right. At your next meal, decide to replace just one healthy item in place of a not so healthy choice.
In the end, the small things you do eventually add up. Sure, it may take a little longer to achieve your goals, but even the smallest drop of water has the power to change the face of wide beaches and majestic mountains. Where will you begin?

Recently, there has been much discussion about whether or not one should leave Disqus for Facebook Comments. In response, I decided to write a blog post entitled, "Disqus vs. Facebook Comments," which outlines my thoughts on the subject. As of this article, I still haven't decided on my preference, so if you're a reader that wants to share your thoughts, please do so on that article.
This how-to article is the result of a discussion I had with Stefan Svartling, who recently asked me how I installed the new Facebook Comments on Google's Blogger (Blogspot) platform. If you're interested in a step-by-step guide, this article is for you.
Step 1: Create A Facebook App
For the beginning step, my assumption is that you are starting off from scratch and have no Facebook Social Plugins installed. If this is not the case, feel free to jump to the appropriate step below.
Before one proceeds to add the neat Facebook features, one needs a Facebook App ID. To secure a Facebook App ID, simply follow this link and complete the required information.
Once the basic information has been added to the form, Facebook will provide you with an official Facebook App ID.
To make many of Facebook's Social Plugins work through XFBML, you will need to post the JavaScript SDK within Blogger. To complete this step, do the following:
On your keyboard, hold the Ctrl+F and type "<body>" and hit Enter
Immediately following the open body tag, paste the following code. Remember: Replace my App ID with your App ID.
Click Save Template
<!-- Facebook SDK script Code -->
<div id='fb-root'/>
<script>
window.fbAsyncInit = function() {
FB.init({
appId : 'YOUR APPID',
status : true, // check login status
cookie : true, // enable cookies to allow the server to access the session
xfbml : true // parse XFBML
});
FB.Event.subscribe('comments.create', function(response) {
// do something with comments.create like notify me when new comment
});
FB.Event.subscribe('edge.create', function(response) {
// do something with edge.create like notify me when someone likes something
});
};
(function() {
var e = document.createElement('script');
e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js';
e.async = true;
document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e);
}());
</script>
<!-- End SDK script Code -->
Step 3: Add Comment Code
Now that you have the JavaScript SDK installed, now its time to add the code for Facebook Comments. To complete this step, do the following:
Note: Upon completion of this step, Facebook Comments should show as expected. However, should you fail to see the comment box, review your source code for any other conflicting Facebook scripts. Personally, I had a few lingering scripts from previous Facebook Social Plugin attempts.
Closing Thoughts
Congratulations! If you've made it this far, then you should have a working comment box on your page that now sends notifications to Facebook with each comment. If you have any questions or additional requests for how-to articles, please feel free to ask in the comment section below.
