First Impression Of Google+

It's like walking into a toy store. Everything is so new and exciting. I just want to play. Yes, I'm talking about Google+.

Earlier this evening, I received an invite from a friend. (Thank you, Amir!) Unable to contain myself, I clicked through the initial email and started exploring the different pages and features.

At first glance, there wasn't a lot going on. The main reason being that I hadn't connected with anyone, yet. Outside of Amir, it was a lonely place.

Immediately, I offered invitations to friends on Facebook, Twitter, and the Room 3026 Live crew. With each new acceptance, the place quickly became a fun and enjoyable place.

Many of us who have been fortunate enough to get in are just trying to figure out the details. Robert Scoble, Louis Gray, and others are poking around and sharing their findings.

I've noticed some are already sharing keyboard shortcuts and other less obvious features. There are plenty of conversations and group hangouts happening right before my eyes. It's neat.

Unlike many who seem to have it all figured out, an assumption made after reading early blog articles, I'm just trying to get my bearings straight. What can I do? How do I make the most of this experience? Who can I connect with next?

Similar to my Google Wave, Buzz, and Reader experiences, it feels an awful lot like the Wild West. What are the rules? Norms?

Clearly, there are plenty of questions that will get ironed out soon. I just wanted to take a moment and let you know that it's alright in there. Google+ has some really flexible features that allows for public interactions and private ones, too. It allows you to engage with friends and the public at large with just a click of the mouse.

One thing that sticks out in my mind is the ability to follow someone, like Twitter, but engage with them like we do on Facebook.

Another neat feature is the Friendfeed-like stream that sends an active conversation back to the top of the stream. It also does a good job of sending email notifications when conversations are updated. For those no longer interested in the conversation, just mute it.

While I haven't had the time to fully explore the mobile app, my friend Michael Render seems to be pretty impressed by it. That's a good thing.

Based upon my initial observations, Google+ is going to be the flashy new toy that many will be writing and talking about for some time. I anticipate many blogs will be written about Facebook and it's potential response.

Will Google+ be a game changer? It's too early to tell. I think it really just depends on where my friends end up.

Outside of that, I don't have a lot more to share. Although, I'm ready to share some invitations once they open back up. If you're interested in receiving one, please let me know. You can leave me a message on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comment section below.

I look forward to engaging with you soon.

One other thing, how long do you think it will take before Empire Avenue allows me to connect my Google+ account?

C3 Church Live Blog: The Power of Prayer

Today, Pastor Matt Fry continues the Five Star series, "The Power of Prayer."

To watch the live video stream, click here.

Scripture: James 5:13-20

10:09 am
Whenever we pray, we can access the supernatural. Whatever the prayer we need to pray, let's pray that today.
10:06 am
Sin is really just missing the mark. We all are sinners, but God will forgive and cleanse you from sins if we just ask. The effective prayer of a righteous (not perfect) man can accomplish much (James 5:16).
10:02 am
The fourth prayer is "Lord forgive me!" Confess your sins to God and each other. We need to be humble and honest. Many of us are playing games at church. We tend to put this mask on to cover up what we're really struggling with. We will never experience the goodness and healing until we are honest about our hurt and pains. This church is a safe place to talk about our addictions.
10:01 am
There were some who believe that sin is the reason for our sickness. In James, we learn that sins are different than a sickness. You can be healed and delivered from sin.
9:59 am
Pastor Matt tells a story about a doctor visit where he found out he had heart problems. Instead of telling the church, he wanted to keep it to himself. Martha strongly encouraged him to talk with the leaders of the church. Sometimes we need to ask God more than once.
9:56 am
Matt talks about Jim. Jim is a member of the church who was in pain for many years. He prayed to be healed and today he no longer walks with a cane. Jesus told the disciples to heal people and anoint them with oil. There's nothing wrong with doctors or medicine, but the most important thing we need is God and prayer. We also have to do the right thing to take care of ourselves. We have to eat right, exercise, and take our vitamins, but nothing can heal like our God.
9:51 am
The third prayer is "Lord heal me!" If your sick and need a healing, you are to take the initiative to ask the leaders of the church to pray for you. This is an act of humbling ourselves. It's Biblical! What happens if I'm not healed? Sometimes God doesn't heal the way we want him too. Sometimes he'll heal now, sometimes he'll heal later, sometimes he'll heal in eternity.
9:50 am
Only God can give us the ability to "Cheer" and "Praise Him" during the middle of a storm. It could be physical pain or financial hardship. God is faithful to give hope and lift you up.
9:46 am
The second prayer is, "Lord I praise you!" Are you happy? As brought up in the first point, we should praise the Lord even when we face trouble. Many may complain or give up, but we are encouraged to praise the Lord still.
9:44 am
Don't ask "Why?" One should ask, "What?" What are you trying to say to me, God? We need to be humble before the Lord. Matt talks about Paul and Silas. He describes the time they were in a stinky prison. Even then, in that dirt and grime of their situation, they prayed to the Lord. They didn't complain. They praised Him in the midst of the storm.
9:40 am
The first prayer is "Lord help me!" This can be one of the most powerful prayers. One doesn't need a formal prayer. Being all spiritual is not a requirement for a prayer to work. God is not impressed by holier than thou type prayers.
9:35 am
Pastor Matt comes on stage after an awesome recap video of Fuel 2011. He also talks about the Saturday night service, which begins in July.

Hundreds Gather At C3 Church To Honor Sergeant Mark Bradley

Earlier today, friends, family, and supporters gathered together at C3 Church in Clayton, NC to pay their final respects to a fallen American hero.

Sergeant Mark Bradley, who served in the United State Marine Corps, was the victim of a roadside bomb in Afghanistan earlier this month. He passed away Thursday.

According to a report from WRAL, Sgt. Bradley's "lung collapsed, his kidney and liver failed, he underwent heart surgery and doctors had to amputate both legs before Bradley died 13 days later." Mark was 25 years old. He leaves behind his mother and wife.

During this time of mourning, reports of a protest group, known as the Westboro Baptist Church, had plans to picket the funeral service. In response, hundreds gathered to show their support for Sgt. Bradley. Many people in attendance were prepared to create a human barrier around the church.

One such group, The Patriot Guard Riders, attended the service en masse and demonstrated their sincerest respect by adorning the walkway with American flags. As the family approached the church, they all turned and saluted.

According to a brochure, The Patriot Guard Riders attend "the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family." They maintain two basic objectives:

  1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
  2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.
Thankfully, the funeral service went undisturbed. Although, WRAL reports that a few Westboro members tried to recruit protesters at the nearest gas station.

Below are a few images from the funeral service.

C3 Church TV - Coming January 2012

C3 Church service during Christmas 2007 (Photo credit: Josh Patterson)

On Saturday, Lee Chatham, Director of Production at C3 Church, and Scott Peck, Executive Producer for BMCFerrell, met with members of the Technical Arts Ministry Team to announce plans for "C3 Church TV."  The new television broadcast is scheduled to air January 2012, although no details were given on which network will pick up the show.

The purpose of the new television ministry, as explained by Peck, is to "tell the story of Christ, share the life-giving message, and get people into church." For C3, the new project, slated to begin Fall 2011, is in line with its vision, "real hope for real people in a real world."

BMCFerrell, the consulting firm on this project, is a media agency out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In June 2009, BMCFerrell worked with the Association of Related Churches (ARC) to help produce the All Access Conference, which was hosted at C3 Church.

To prepare for the project, the church will work closely with BMCFerrell to develop its media plan. Proposed changes include the acquisition of 5 high-definition digital cameras, 7-10 Fresnel lights, and a new stage design.

ARC All Access Conference 2009 (Photo: BMCFerrell)
The goal for the next six months is to maximize the technology and other existing resources to engage the viewer. "This means the production needs to be comparable to other shows on television," Scott explained.

In addition to new equipment, the church also needs help from staff and volunteers to "make the machine go."

Lee and Scott agreed that the television ministry will require more time and energy, but the benefits will outweigh the investment.

In response to the presentation, members of the Tech Team asked questions about training opportunities and changes to video content.

According to Scott Peck, the focus for the 30-minute show is the message delivered by Matt Fry, C3's Lead Pastor. Everything, from lights to set design, is arranged to deliver an engaging message that builds a lasting relationship with the audience. "What one sees on television is exactly what one experiences in person."

For volunteers seeking to serve on the C3 Tech Team (no matter the level of experience), training will be readily available, both through hands-on and printed material.

The long-term benefit of a televised ministry is the opportunity to reach people in a new way. Based upon previous projects, Scott explained that out of every 10 new people that comes to the church, 7 of those will have seen the broadcast first.

As a member of C3, and leader of the Light Team, I am extremely excited about the benefits of this new endeavor. Not only will volunteers learn the latest techniques used by media experts, but we also get to help others find the Lord Jesus and experience life that only he can give.

If you are interested in joining the Light Team, or any of the other areas in Technical Arts, please follow this link and complete the Ministry Team Sign-Up form.

The CinchCast Platform Is Now Ready For Business

CinchCast, the company that powers BlogTalkRadio, announced on their website the official release of its cloud-based platform. The purpose of CinchCast is to provide "solutions that allow businesses to create, share, measure and monetize audio content." Additionally, it is "the answer to an increasing demand from businesses for a simple solution to produce and share original audio content."

As a host of Room 3026 Live, a daily talk show airing 1pm (EST) on the BlogTalkRadio Network, I am familiar with the platform now being offered to companies. The benefit, as I see it, is the opportunity to take advantage of the technological offerings but also the professional services, which include content strategy, production, training, talent management, promotion, and transcription.

In a recent interview, Alan Levy, Founder and CEO of BlogTalkRadio, gave listeners an insight on the future of BlogTalkRadio, Cinch, and the company now known as CinchCast. In the interview, Alan talked about the new Virtual Broadcasting Studio, which hadn't gone live yet. He talked about the plan to make the system easier to use while also enhancing connections between social networks.

One of the most interesting changes on the horizon is the creation of channels and the blending of Cinch with BlogTalkRadio.

One thing is clear, the CinchCast platform has an impressive resume under its belt by powering more than 1.5 million shows since 2006, delivers 1,500 hours of content per day, supports 13 million listens per month, and offers strategic solutions for brands like Sears, Business Insider, SAP, and United Business Media.

Companies seeking to take advantage of the new CinchCast are encouraged to schedule a demonstration by completing the contact form.

C3 Chruch Live Blog: Will the Real Man Please Stand Up

Today, Pastor Matt Fry continues the Five Star series, "Will the Real Man Please Stand Up."

To watch the live video stream, click here.

Scripture: James 5:7

10:07 am
Pastor Matt talks about a track star (Derek Redmond) that hurt himself while running a big race. His father ran out of the stands to help him. Derrick said that we have to finish the race. Together, with his dad, they finished the race. Finishing the race was more valuable then ever winning the gold medal. Click here for the video of Derek Redmond.
10:05 am
The second half of Job's life was far better than the first part because he was patient, courageous, and enduring. Let's be men who endure, knowing that by being patient we will see blessings. With Jesus, we have hope.
10:02 am
Suffering...perseverance...blessing. Three stages to every good work of God. Stage One) It's impossible, Stage Two) It's difficult, and then Stage Three) It's done. It's not about how you start, but how you finish.
10:01 am
Job, even in the worst situation, never cursed God. He continued to praise God. Job is a real man. He endured. He had an eternal perspective.
9:59 am
Job, Elijah, and Daniel are examples of people with endurance. Job, who was blessed and successful, eventually lost everything (Kids, stuff, and everything). Satan took it all away from him.
9:57 am
Third point: Real men have endurance. It means to not give up. It means to stick around for the long haul. Real men don't throw in the towel when others do.
9:55 am
Pastor Matt Fry seeks to move the men into action. He challenges the men to step up and be strong. Forget what the world says, what does God say? "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Are you ready to "Kick butt for God? Are you with me?" Let's make a difference together.
Matt talks about the C3 Warriors that meet twice a month. The men involved in this program work to make the community better. It's not about being perfect. It's about stepping up. Be courageous. Any dead fish can float down stream. It takes a strong fish to swim against the current.
9:54 am
What makes you angry? What frustrates you? What moves you? Being angry is ok, as long as you don't sin. That anger can be used to fight good causes (human trafficking, AIDS, hunger, broken marriages, perverted lifestyles, suicides, etc.). The very thing that frustrates you can easily become your ministry. This may be God's way of telling you what you need to stand up against.
9:50 am
Second point: Real men have courage. God wants us to be courageous. Courage comes from the inside. Instead of blaming everyone else or complaining, we need to stand up and be the man of God. Women are not looking for perfect men. Women want a man that is courageous and strong. Not strong as in physically, but willing to stand up for the Lord.
9:48 am
We need to be patient on the Lord. Remember that God will return. When in Heaven, there will be no pain, no death. Matt cannot wait to get to Heaven. He doesn't want to go right now (by himself), he'd like to go with all of us. God's return can come at anytime, though. Be ready.
9:45 am
First point: Real men of God are patient.
Being patient is really hard to do. We want things now, we want things quick. You can learn a lot about patience while traveling. Matt tells a story about his recent travel experiences on the plane and what he learned about patience.
To put it another way, patience is having a "long fuse." It takes a long time to get angry.
9:42 am
Outdoor baptisms will take place during both services next Sunday.

LinkedIn Comes To Klout

Klout, the online service that measures an individual's influence within social networks, just announced that it will now consider your LinkedIn activity when analyzing Klout scores. If you have not yet connected your LinkedIn account, visit the dashboard and do it now. According to the popular service, the connection with LinkedIn will start providing results some time next week.

Automatically Suggest Twitter Accounts To New Users

Yesterday, TechCrunch revealed a hidden feature on Twitter. For those interested in suggesting Twitter accounts to new users, you can now take advantage of the recent discovery. To create your personalized suggested user list, do the follow:

  1. Create a List
  2. Give the list a new name. It can be whatever you like. I called mine, "Suggested Users"
  3. In the Description box, place the following hashtag, "#WelcomeToTwitter"
  4. Place the privacy to "Public"
  5. Click "Save list"
Once you complete the following steps, any new Twitter user that creates an account after visiting your profile will see your Suggested Users list. This is great for friends and family who don't know who to follow. This is also a wonderful idea for Universities that have multiple departments with Twitter accounts. Why not help new users find all of your departments and programs?

Enjoy!

Google Mobile Search Highlights 'Places' On Its Front Page

Lifehacker reported on their blog the overnight release of 'Places' to the front page of Google's mobile search.  As seen in the image above, the page now highlights restaurants, coffee, and bars for your current location. By clicking on the coffee icon, for example, users will see a list of local coffee shops with an address, phone number, reviews, and more.

For additional listings, simply click on the "More" button for places related to Fast Food, What's Nearby, Shops, ATMs, Gas Stations, and Attractions. If you still can't find what you're looking for, use the Google Places search bar located at the top of the screen.

While on my family camping trip a few weeks ago, I found Google Places to be an extremely useful tool. With the click of a button, I found exactly what I needed in a location unfamiliar to me.

Well done, Google!
