A Father's Love

"When my daughter says, 'Daddy I need you!' I wonder if she has any idea that I need her a billion times more." – Stanley Behrman

There are moments, like now, when I stop and think about the role of a father and the overall impact that we play in the lives of our children. Growing up, I recognized that my mother was involved in everything. From hot meals on the table to early arrival time at church, she was the one we turned to for basic survival. What about my dad? Where was he during all of this?

Like my mother, he was present, but he always seemed to play the supportive role. We knew he went to work, provided financial stability, served as protection from all that could harm us, and showed us kids how to be strong, skilled, and intelligent. He was a quiet man with an infectious laugh. We knew he loved us because he was always there when we needed him. Day or night, close or far, this man would do just about anything to make sure we were taken care of. For that, I am forever thankful.

As I write that last line, I wonder sometimes if he knows how much he means to me. How important and influential he was toward my growth and development into manhood. Even now, I carry many of his teachings with me as I attempt to be even half the man he was to us.

Looking at my daughter, I hope that all my children know how much I love and support them. While I may not be the outspoken type with perfect words to say, I know that when they need me, I will be there. Quiet as I am, know that there is a strength behind this calm exterior and an incessant drive to protect and to provide for their every need.

To all my fathers out there, please know that I understand and salute the important role you play. Stay strong and continue to do what's right as those lives were entrusted us. In all that you do, remember you are your son's first hero and your daughter's first love.

Be great today!
