My First Weekend At The Marr Branch Haunted House

Damond Nollan at the Marr Branch Haunted House

This past Friday night, I decided to go behind the scenes of the Marr Branch Haunted House. Last year, I came as a guest, but this year I wanted to participate in the annual production as a cast member. While it is important to note, this particular haunted house is not intended for small children, the easily offended, or the faint of heart, we developed a connection with the owners and performers, which is what brought us back for their Valentine's Day Madness. Not only that, but it has been years since I was on the stage last and I thought it would be fun to expand my acting experience to include a deranged lunatic.

Leading up to Friday, I wondered what my role would be. What character would I play? What part of the house would they ask me to support? Would I be able to live up to the standards of a good scare actor? Without knowing what to expect, I arrived on the set wearing a pair of old blue jeans and a grungy white t-shirt. My jeans had a huge hole in the knee with a few smaller ones near the back pockets. Just in case I needed to change, I brought some extra clothes and left them in the car.

The call time was 6 pm, but since I was driving from Durham, the earliest I could arrive was around 7 o'clock. While I wasn't exactly on time, I was there early enough to get into character. Jon-Blaney, founder and ringmaster for this unhinged circus, welcomed me with open arms. In thinking about how best to describe him, he reminds me of a younger version of Negan from The Walking Dead. He has a similar swagger about him in that he has attracted and actively leads a merry band of psychopaths. He has a slender build with straight black hair. He wears a closely cropped haircut that runs longer on top and a chinstrap beard with a full mustache. On this particular night, he is wearing a fur vest with no shirt that revealed a number of tattoos both on his arms and chest. His face is painted white with black circles around his eyes. Even in character, he is extremely personable and charismatic.

As we stand in the dressing room, which is the grassy area leading into the entrance of the house, Jon-Blaney provides directions using his deep voice that is wrapped up in a strong North Carolina accent. With a plastic tub of dark black ash in his hands, he asked me to close my eyes. For the next minute or so, he applied the substance in a random slashing motion across my chest and shoulders. He explained that we need to look the part. He then pulled out a large bottle of deep red liquid that serves as blood and followed a similar motion. By the time he finished, my shirt definitely looked like I had been rolling around in the back woods. My skin was dark and my clothes looked worn and extremely unclean. If you saw me in the store, you would probably think I haven't showered in months.

As a final touch, Jon went to his box of costumes and he pulled out a hard plastic mask that resembled Rich Uncle Pennybags from the famous game, Monopoly. Using his already filthy hands, he continued to wipe the black substance to the clean surface of the mask. With my character in hand, he introduced me to a guy named Chris, who would help indoctrinate me into this new world of haunted houses.

Chris, a middle-aged man wearing jeans, a kid-sized white t-shirt with multicolored words written on the front, and suspenders, revealed our location for the night. He explained, while standing outside of an old barn, that we are on the second floor of this building along with a room full of dolls. I smiled because this was a new room and I was extremely excited about getting started. He continued with his introduction by explaining that Jessy, a young teenaged girl who has a passion for make-up, would serve as the third person in our area.

After introductions and a short game planning session, Chris led us toward the barn where a tall wall of thick black plastic construction film hid the secret entrance. Just beyond the opening, there was a corridor that led straight ahead toward the middle of the barn and a staircase on the right. He headed toward the stairs.

Once we reached the second floor, the three of us stood in a large open room made entirely of wood. Based on the condition of the building and random artifacts, I would guess that the barn was built in the early 1900s. With the sun setting, there was still enough light to complete a cursory inventory of the room. In the four corners, I saw large piles of wooden sticks. If I were to guess, these were used in combination with wire to build a fence. On one pile, I saw an old shovel, pitchfork, and rake. In the other pile I saw an old mattress, two old dusty wreaths that one would find near a grave site, and other random items. The remaining piles were too dark to see clearly, but I would imagine they collected similar things over the years.

Looking up from the floors, I noticed beams of wood running from one side of the building to the other. Despite the tall ceilings, these rafters were about 6 feet off the ground and a potential hazard for us taller individuals. In one of the dark corners, I saw about 6 rows of dried tobacco leaves hanging free. On the other side of the room, the one nearest the farm tools, there were long rolls of material that resembled old sheets and old-fashioned insulation. When touched, they practically disintegrated in my hand. Like the tobacco leaves, this material ran across the rafters and hung down in random spots.

Outside of the original items that have clearly been here for years, there were a number of newer objects set up around the room. On the floor, there were random baby dolls of various shapes and sizes. Near the window, there was a motorized swing set that carried three badly mutilated dolls in a circular motion. Near the tobacco leaves, there was a mahogany colored vanity with a matching stool. To the left of the vanity was a small mechanical teeter totter with two dolls sitting on each end. Near the front entrance, there was another doll hanging motionless from the rafters.

While I was looking around the attic, Chris put his cooler down just beyond the sheets and walked over to the vanity. He grabbed the stool and moved it in the middle of the room where he then stepped up with arms above his head. Within a few seconds, I heard a clicking noise and the room came to life.

From far above, I saw black lights turn on which caused all of the white objects in the room to illuminate like the jungle in Avatar on the planet Pandora. The two swings that were dormant slowly started to move. One of the dolls on the swing made a weird laughing sound as it cycled through its programmed messaging.

Over the next few minutes, Chris went through the process of turning on the strobe lights and an eerie soundtrack on the boombox resting above. Between the laughing dolls and spine-chilling music, this room was primed perfectly for a good scare.

While we waited for our first group, Chris once again walked the team through the game plan. Jessy, who looked like the long-haired girl from the The Ring, will sit at the vanity, I was placed near the entrance, and Chris behind the hanging sheets. As guests walk in, I would go first, followed by Chris, and then Jessy.

"Any final tips on how to be scary?" I ask. Chris shared that less is more. No need for yelling or screaming. The scariest thing you can do is come up from behind someone and whisper whatever comes to mind. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but the best I could come up with in such short notice was, "Get your hand out my pocket!,""Pink cookies in a plastic bag getting crushed by buildings," and "Yummmm, your hair smells nice!" I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.

While I don't remember much about the first group, I do remember spending the majority of the night trying different things. Do I sneak up from behind, jump out in front, or rattle them from the side? Should I yell or whisper? My options were open.

With each attempt, I made a mental note of what worked and what didn't. Although, it is important to recognize that everyone is different. Some scare easily while others don't appear rattled at all.

By the end of night one, which went by very quickly, I was ready to receive any feedback that I could get and then go home to wash away the dirt.

My mind, which was focused on how to improve my scare tactics, spent the most of Saturday watching videos and reading about the anatomy of fear and how best to apply it. While limited, I found a few resources that gave me something to try later that evening. My two most memorable takeaways were to close the gap and get big. Instead of standing at a safe distance, which is what I did the first night, I was advised to get within 4 feet from the guest. For many, this is extremely unnerving because we're breaking the bubble of personal space. Second, to appear bigger and more threatening, we were instructed to open our arms and widen the body to create a sense of  massive intimidation.

On night two, I also decided to change my outfit a bit and get more into character than before. I bought a red flannel shirt and a white kid-sized tank top. The tank top was so small that it barely covered my bloated stomach. In addition to the clothes, I bought a dust mask out of necessity. Due to the large amounts of dust in the attic, my sinuses released a thick black discharge while in the shower. I also got some white paint in hopes that it would help illuminate my face as I came in for the scare.

After getting my make up applied, we went back up to the attic for round two. In Chris' absence, I took the pole position behind the dangling sheets. In addition to the minor modifications to my outfit, I also continued to use a shovel which created a loud and often high pitched scraping noise when applied against the wood. What I found is that I didn't need to yell or scream because the shovel made enough noise to startle even the most unresponsive visitor.

As I think about the scare tactics for night two, I definitely think I did much better. Timing was still a concern as I often waited until after the first person walked by before I ran out from the shadows. However, I found that the scare on night two was far more frightening than on day one, but I will continue to work on the performance.

Thinking back over the weekend, I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. The other performers are really great people who have normal lives outside of the house. Shout out to Darlene, Chris, Jessy, Jon-Blaney, Jimmy, David, Brad, Van, Dwayne, Cheyenne, Lynne, and Josh for a memorable weekend. Thank you for accepting me as the newest member of the Marr Branch family.

Additionally, thank you to the guests for being such great sports. It's a lot of fun when you get a good group of scaredy cats in your midst. You never know what to expect out of them. Last night, for example, there was a group of grown men who literally freaked out at every single station. I couldn't stop from laughing. Too funny!

Do you like haunted houses? If so, look no further than Marr Branch Haunted House in Mount Olive, NC. Do you want to come through when I'm there? Drop me a message and I'll let you know when I'm performing. Remember, it runs between now and the first weekend in November. Buy your tickets online or at the door for $20 per person.

Cousin Amy Eveskcige Becomes Superintendent of Chief Leschi Schools

Amy Eveskcige Superintendent of Chief Leschi Schools

Wow! My beautiful and very gifted cousin, Amy Eveskcige, receives a write-up in the Tacoma News Tribune for her new position as the Superintendent of Chief Leschi Schools. This woman inspires me to be better.

To the best of my knowledge (cousin, keep me honest), she is the first one in my family to earn a doctoral degree. If not in the entire family, at least in the ones I know (big smile). I am so very proud of her and who she has become. Reading her story, I am amazed how much I didn't know. Having grown up around her and my other cousins, I didn't realize the struggles she went through. I can tell you this, she is a perfect example of the saying, "Your past doesn't define your future."

Congratulations, Amy! Keep achieving.

The Responsibility of Leadership

"Many in leadership positions talk about doing what's right. But only the true leaders actually do it." - Simon Sinek

During this weekend in Kansas City, I met so many new people and old friends alike who are celebrating successes with me. I have heard people talk positively about my efforts in the gym, with eating right, time management, traveling the world, leadership development, my business, hope dealing, writing the dissertation, parenthood, reading books, and serving in church.

First, it's humbling to know that so many people actually read and watch what I'm doing. Second, because I know people are watching and applying my lessons and experiences to their lives, I definitely feel the responsibility that comes with it.

To me, this responsibility means knowing what to do, doing it, sharing it with others, and then repeating the process.

As leaders, we are all fallible and bound to fall down, get weak, grow tired, make poor judgments, experience fear, and fail important tests in life, but leaders get back up and find the strength, courage, and fortitude to do what's right for the ones who follow as much as it is for self.

With that written, I want to thank all of you who take the time each day to read, watch, apply, and support. What you may not realize is that YOU inspire me to be my very best self. I know that if I can achieve in each of these areas, so can you.

As a team, I hope to pour life, hope, encouragement, direction, and support your way for when I'm down or off my game, you do the same.

Champions, let's make today a great day and go get what we came for.

Children's Water Fountain in Kansas City, MO

In 4 days, I'll be heading to Kansas City, MO for the weekend. Definitely looking forward to the treasures they offer.

Here is an interesting water fountain that showcases kids playing at dusk.

For those that live in the area or have been before, what do you recommend that I see or do while there?

A Proud Moment Built On Positive Change

Last night in Goldsboro, NC, my boy Kay Dupri took the reigns and led the event with such confidence and poise. He brought his personal story to life in a way that made it feel like it was the first time I'd ever heard it. He touched on where he came from and described where he was going. Powerful message!

As I sat there listening to him, I had such a feeling of pride knowing that he worked on himself everyday to improve on the man that what was already there. Then, he went back and helped someone else do the same.

He has been coachable and teachable since day one and the fruits of his labor are now beginning to show. Is this the end? Oh, no! This is just the beginning. What we did over the past 12 months was just build a foundation for the magnitude of positive change we are going to see in people's lives. Oh man, I get so excited because we've talked about how we are bringing hope, how we are helping people dream again, improving their self-confidence, developing leaders, increasing the fun factor, and all while improving folk's financial futures. Owwwww!

You know what tops it all off, though? Is the overwhelming sense of fulfillment in knowing that you played a role in improving someone's life for the better. It ain't always easy, and there are short-term sacrifices that are being made, but this night was one night that made it all worth it.

My ninja, I'm proud of you, bro! Let's continue to set some fires in people's hearts and go put a dent in the universe. Let's get it!

Dr. Herbert R. Davis Visits NCCU and Talks Leadership During Changing Times

Earlier this week, I had the distinct honor to meet Dr. Herbert Reynolds Davis, author of the book, "The Christian Leadership Blueprint."

He dropped by the office (NCCU) during our town hall meeting and dropped some nuggets on us. I couldn't write fast enough.

My favorite points were on setting and communicating vision (remember, do it often). He also spoke about celebrating the short-term wins, but avoid declaring victory until it's over, and building a culture that makes the daily disciplines stick (this is how we do it here).

A huge THANK YOU to Dr. Davis for being so giving of his time and experience. #priceless

Day 4: Back and Biceps

Good morning! It is Day 4 (back and biceps).

As I finish my first meal of the day and prepare to hit the gym, I wanted to stop in and wish you an amazing day.

I am happy to report that I did come home last night and finish my last meal, which was 10 egg whites, before going to bed. That was after getting the urge to eat something not so healthy, most likely something found at a fast food restaurant.

Remember, celebrate the daily disciplines for they lead to the results. Excuses lead to nothingness. Just get it done!

Let's go get what we came for, Champions!

Decide to Live Your Dream Life

One of the most challenging parts of restricting meals is the urge to snack on unhealthy foods. Chips, burgers, fries, pizza, or ice cream can throw a wrench in your plans. Recognize that you get stronger when you face the temptation and say, "No!"

Take a moment to reflect on what you want. Remember WHY you started and focus on the life you're saying "Yes" to.

I'm getting the urge right now...it's natural, but I want the unnatural results, so I'm going home to cook some eggs for my final meal.

Day 3 of 84 coming to a close. Let's finish strong and wake tomorrow to beast out Day 4 (back and biceps).

ULEAD 2014 Cohort from UNC and NCCU

The University of North Carolina (UNC) and North Carolina Central Universityare now taking applications for the University Leadership Education and Development (ULEAD) program.

You may recall, this was the leadership development program I recently graduated from. It taught me:

- How to communicate when the stakes are high

- How to be a coach
- How to negotiate strategically and effectively
- How to influence through appreciative leadership

If you are an up and coming leader within either UNC or NCCU, I would definitely recommend this program to you. Get your applications filled out and submitted before March 23, 2015.

Good luck!

The Dynamic Duo Strikes Again!

Yesterday afternoon, the Dynamic Duo left Goldsboro, NC after months of consistently working with new leaders and hope dealers in the area.

For a single afternoon, we jumped in the freshly polished ride and headed to Raleigh/Durham to work with people who simply needed some face-to-face time. It was definitely a pleasure to pour into an audience that would later get their mind blown! I love when that happens. (Laughing)

Man, this dude, Kay Dupri, is definitely a pleasure to work with and his hunger to help change lives is amazing!

2015 has started off better than I could have imagined and it's only going to get better. Let's go!

Celebrating Success: Mr. Kanem Dupree

Happy Friday, ya'll!

Can I share something with you? I woke up this morning totally excited. See, I knew what was coming and it felt an awful lot like Christmas morning as a kid. Remember that feeling? (Laughing)

Let me take a moment just to publicly celebrate with my friend, Kay Dupri. Taking you back for a moment, it was about 9 months ago that Mr. Dupri and I sat outside the Smithfield Outlet Mall talking about success, helping people, and locking arms to make something magical happen in the Goldsboro/Smithfield area.

Do understand, we don't intend to limit that success to just Wayne and Johnston Counties, we understood that if we can help develop leaders and show them how to improve their lives through goal setting and vision casting, we could do it anywhere.

Today, Kanem has reached a level of development and success that deserves recognition. He has made me so proud. See, he was willing to partner with me on something long before it had seriously taken root. He believed in me and was willing to go through the struggles and challenges to make our dreams come true.

No, we haven't reached our ultimate goal, YET (laughing), but we have made some significant strides in the right direction. Today, he is the beneficiary of hard work, late nights, and long phone calls with me (that's work in of itself). (Laughing).

Kay, my "Running Partner", my "Road Dog", my "Ace"...I am so proud of you and who you are becoming. Thank YOU for rocking with me, encouraging me, and inspiring me to be better each and every day. This is just the beginning for you and I'm totally excited to see what your future holds.

Let's get it my Ninja!

VIP Members at the Momentum Event in Louisville, KY

Team Vision at Momentum 2015 in Louisville, KY

Back in Louisville, those of us in VIP got early access to the event. Here are a few of my friends from all over the United States.

Imagine, if you can, loud upbeat music playing with lights, cameras, and plenty of pretty faces in the crowd. I kid you not, it's like a family reunion or homecoming each time we all get together.

Love these people. There is something amazing about positive people who just like to have fun and smile a lot.

2015 Transformation: Day 2 of 80

Today I completed Day 2 of 80 in the gym. I weighed in at 228.5 lbs, which is about 14 pounds heavier than when I finished the last 12 week transformation.

Completing the 4 week DTP program added more muscle, but also increased my fat percentage to like 14% from 10%. Immediately following that, we went into two holidays and a cruise. Not making any excuses, but I don't want to fall victim to that mistake next year.

As with any journey, it begins with a single step. Getting back into the habit of eating and working out feels like riding a bike, but it will require some effort to get it back to my normal routine.

My evenings have to end around 9:30 pm at the latest if I'm going to make those dramatic changes in my life. It will mean a sacrifice somewhere, but it will be worth it.

Today's focus was on chest and triceps. Tomorrow, it's LEG DAY!

The Next 80 Day Sprint Begins Today!

Today is my first day back after a WONDERFUL weekend celebrating successes. Yes, there will be more pictures telling the story of my time in Louisville, KY, but today marks day ONE of my next sprint. Therefore, I'm going to jump ahead to the end and just get things going.

Last year, I learned the value of setting goals and just going all out for a period of time. Well, having completed a successful sprint, it is now time to set some new goals for the next 80 days. That's how many days I have left until the next big event in Kansas City.

So, by April 17, 2015, I will have achieved the following:

1) 6% Bodyfat as a result of the 12 week body transformation.
2) Moved from Senior Rep to Director in my company.
3) Completed Chapters 1-3 of Dissertation.

To do that, I am just going to go all in for the next 80 days. No television, no movies, and nothing extra that doesn't move me forward in these three areas.

It starts today and you are my accountability partner during this process. It means that you'll see a ton of repetitive posts, pictures, and updates while I'm on this journey. Is that ok? Are you with me? Ready to get started?

Here we go...

Farewell Bahamas! The End of Team Vision's Cruise 2014

In the morning, before we all jumped off the boat, a few of the team members, and their guests, took a picture on the back part of the ship.

Overall, the cruise entertained around 450 friends and family from all over the United States. Each year, the numbers continue to grow, which makes it exciting. We get a chance to meet new people, strengthen old friendships, and discuss our next adventures.

As my virtual tour through the Bahamas trip last month comes to a close, I hope that you enjoyed my perspective.

I know the next big vacation will be in the July/August time frame. Some are talking about going back to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which is a place I've never been. Woohoo!

Once I get some more information on that trip, I'll be sure to share it with you. So, stay tuned.

Again, thank you for rocking with me. Now, it's back to my regularly scheduled programming.

Until next time...

Back to the Majesty After a Day in the Sun

After our last picture on the beach, we walked back to the taxi cabs that were waiting for us on the other side of the hill. Like a game of musical chairs, people were hopping from vehicle to vehicle trying to find where they fit in.

By the look on everyone's faces, it had been a long day full of fun in the sun. There were those who wanted to race back and get cleaned up for the evening festivities while others just needed a nap.

On the way back to the boat, people stopped off to grab gifts from the local stores. If you're good, you can haggle down to a great price for just about everything.

Looking at the picture, I see that I was able to get a tan. It starts off red, but eventually evens out to a nice bronze. Well, at least I think so. :)
