Getting Back Into Shape the Easy Way

Getting Back Into Shape the Easy Way

It has been more than a few years since my last serious weight loss transformation and I’m ready to get back at it. Yes, there have been numerous attempts to reboot the process since that time, but none of those attempts seemed to stick for long.

Regardless of the reason, I chose to stop working out and eating right. As a result, I gained weight. At first, I enjoyed eating whatever kind of foods that I wanted, but eventually, I couldn’t consume terrible food without feeling guilty. First, I don’t want a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or any other condition that can be prevented with better choices. Second, I knew that as I ate the comfort food, it was adding to my waistline and overall weight.

As I write this article, I currently weight around 245 lbs. At one point in my life, I’ve weighed as much as 280 lbs and as low as 212 lbs. Of course, this was as an adult. Because I’ve done it before, I know that I can lose the weight again. The answer rests with my habits and strict adherence to a meal plan, daily cardio, and weight training.

In the past, while making huge strides, I recall packing 4 to 6 meals each day and eating every few hours. It was a combination of fish, steak, or chicken with rice, sweet potato, and broccoli. For breakfast, it was oatmeal with 6 eggs (2 whole eggs and 4 egg whites). My cardio session was 20 minutes long, twice a day, followed by a rigorous weight training session that focused on a single body part at least 5 to 6 days a week. It didn’t matter if I was on a cruise ship, in a hotel room, at home, or away, I always prepared to follow the aforementioned plan of action. As a result, I lost a lot of weight.

I remember losing so much weight that everything I wore looked way too big for me. It was as if I was wearing my father’s outfit or something. That’s more of a joke since the fact of the matter is that I’m actually taller and bigger than any of my dads. Just putting that out there.

At one point, my success was so evident that I’d get questions often about what I’m doing. I would explain my meal plan, workouts, and offer any advice I could to people. I remember feeling accomplished, confident, and full of energy. It was a good time in my life. There was even one point where I was running my hands up and down my stomach in pure amazement. I couldn’t tell you the last time my abs felt that tight and it actually shocked me.

With all of that progress, why did I stop? From what I can remember, I eventually reached a weight where I felt comfortable. In actuality, I should have kept going since I still had some fat around my lower back and abs. However, since I finished a successful 12-week sprint, I wanted to transition to a four-week bulking program. That switch in programs threw me off big time and I ended up enjoying that average weight for a while.

If I gained weight, my clothes were going to be my last line of defense.

Unfortunately, I started allowing those poor habits to return and the weight found its way back up the scale. I told myself that I wouldn’t buy any larger clothes. If I gained weight, my clothes were going to be my last line of defense. Well, people, my clothes are screaming at me. There are some nights that my pants leave itchy impressions in my skin because it’s so tight (mainly around my waistline).

As I look in the mirror today, my abs are gone and it has been replaced by a protruding bulge around my waist. The fat belly hangs over my belt most noticeably in the front and sides. P.S., the love handles are the last thing to go. They are so not attractive!

In my estimation, I look soft and round. My face and stomach are key indicators of weight gain.

My present condition doesn’t reflect who I once was or what I can do.
While I know that I can lose the weight and pack on the muscle again, my present condition doesn’t reflect who I once was or what I can do. The only evidence that I have is some old pictures and the memory I hold in my head. I remember what it felt like to win and I know that I can feel it again.

At this stage of my conditioning, I’m not looking at my body much. Sure, I see what comes out of the shower, but I don’t pay it much attention since I know that I have some serious work to attend to. Instead, my focus is on building the habits that will lead to long-term success.

I know that I have to change my eating. I also know that I have to increase my cardio and weight training activity. Unfortunately, I also know that if I go too fast, I’ll eventually quit because I’m too sore or I’ll start missing meals and workouts.

Knowing this, I went into this season slowly. I want to focus on the habit of daily disciplines. Until I can get this under control, no amount of willpower will keep me in the game for long. Eventually, I’ll make excuses and start missing key activities.

Having written that, let me share with you my strategy. This is something that I’ve done successfully in the past and it has become my goto strategy for any major change I make in my life.

There is something extremely motivating when I get in the gym and can see my muscles flexing, veins popping out under controlled stress, and a massive influx of testosterone through my body which makes me feel unstoppable...animalistic.

In the case of weight loss, I know there is the meal plan and the physical activity. I have to get both sides under control if I’m going to see any real progress. Doing one without the other leaves disappointing results for me. While I can adjust my eating and lose the weight, there is something extremely motivating when I get in the gym and can see my muscles flexing, veins popping out under controlled stress, and a massive influx of testosterone through my body which makes me feel unstoppable...animalistic. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s actually testosterone but you get the picture. It’s the pump, it’s the blood, it’s the body that feels amazing after a good workout. That feeling often influences what I do in the kitchen. If I want to see more gains, I change my habits in the kitchen. They are related.

How Do I Begin?

How do I begin? You ask. I begin slowly. Let me explain. At the beginning of any new sprint, I tend to do the bare minimum. In the case of weight loss, I tend to start by doing one exercise, one session of five-minute cardio, and I eat one controlled meal. That’s it!

Sure, it feels funny to walk in the gym and leave only minutes later, but I have a game plan and I don’t let people’s stares deter me.

For that first week, my goal is to simply make it easy to do the right thing. It’s easy to walk for 5 minutes on the treadmill or stair machine. It’s easy to do one exercise a day. It’s easy to eat one healthy meal a day. That’s the point, you have to make it easy.

With that written, even though it’s easy to do, it doesn’t always mean I’d do it. Sometimes, my mind would say, it’s so easy that you can miss today and double up tomorrow. While true, the point is to establish daily disciplines and habits.

So, while I may get all of my meals, cardio, and weight training done that week, if I didn’t do it according to plan (that means daily effort), then I start the same routine on the following week. I’ll keep doing this same one exercise, one five minute cardio session, and one healthy meal until I’ve successfully done what I planned to do.

Another reason for this slow introduction is that I also give my muscles time to adjust. Yes, there will be sore muscles, but it won’t be debilitating. I also use this time to figure out my schedule. Do I workout in the morning, in the evening, or right after work? When do I cook my meals? With the slow introduction, I get to play around with moving parts until I find a time or routine that fits into my life.

The goal isn’t to get it done the fastest, but rather to re-establish the daily habits that helped me find success.
Once I have been able to successfully follow the plan, and this may take weeks to achieve, I then increase the intensity. Now, I add one additional exercise, which gives me a total of two. I increase my cardio by 5 minutes, which gives me 10 minutes in total. I now eat two healthy meals a day.

Like before, I continue to focus on daily disciplines. While it seems easy to do, going from 15-minute workouts to 30-minute workouts is a jump. I also find that I start warming up after five minutes of cardio.

As I improve my conditioning, strength, and follow through on my plans, I will continue to increase the number of exercises, minutes of cardio, and a number of healthy meals until I’m running at full speed. This process could take weeks or it could even take months. The goal isn’t to get it done the fastest, but rather to re-establish the daily habits that helped me find success years before.

Where Am I At Today?

To give you an update on where I am today, I have consistently been in the gym, eating right, and doing cardio for about 8 or 9 weeks. During that time, I went from the bare minimum effort to 3 exercises per body part per day, 15 minutes of cardio, and 3 healthy meals. The results I’m seeing are fat loss, more strength, and better conditioning.

Eventually, I’d like to rest somewhere between 4 and 6 exercises per body part, 20 minutes of cardio (twice a day), and 4 to 6 healthy meals. Once I’m running at full speed, I am planning to be at my goal in about 6 or 7 months. That should be around September or October of this year, which, once I’m finished with this 12-week sprint, will be another two 12 week cycles. I can live with that.

As I bring this article to a close, you are more than welcome to join me on this year's adventure. It won’t always be exciting, but it will be worth it.

Thank you for reading!

Until next time...

Supplements for the Next 12-Week Body Transformation

"What supplements do you take while on the 12-week body transformation?"

That is a question that I get quite often while talking about my weight loss journey. In this post, let me share what I take and why. Ready? Let's go.

I'll start the introduction by moving from left to right (see picture).

BPI Pump-HD

I am not currently taking this product. Initially, I was interested in the product as a pre-workout. I wanted to kick start my energy and get a solid pump. To my surprise, the Elite Physique Vitapak provides a great product that offers a similar benefit.

GNC GenetixHD Elite Physique Vitapak

This 30-day supply contains a multi-vitamin, creatine 289, carb controller, thermogenic, CLA, and muscle recovery/joint support. I take this stack on a daily basis. The multi-vitamin gives you the vitamins you need while cutting out a variety of foods. This is important.

I only take the creatine on days that I'm strength training, but it's used to provide strength performance while in the gym. Lift more, see more results.

The thermogenic I take in the morning before my first cardio session. Essentially, this is a super effective fat burner that offers tons of energy and alertness (think coffee).

The CLA is a fatty acid that promotes fat metabolism, energy, and lean muscle tone.

ON Whey Protein

This is a HUGE container of Whey Protein that I take after a workout. Building muscles requires plenty of protein in your diet.

Modern BCAA

These branch-chain amino acids are really good for helping you keep your lean muscle mass while cutting. BCAA tells your body to find energy from your fat while protecting your muscles. Naturally, your body wants to borrow energy from muscles over fat, especially while we're limiting our intake through a strict meal plan.

GNC Probiotic

Keep your digestive tract clean and healthy by taking probiotics. I was first introduced to this after returning home from Mexico. Think of yogurt and the benefits of bacteria cultures. This helps with digestion. Consider the amount of food we're eating.

L-Carnitine

This supplement helps turn fat into energy, which supports weight loss.

Omega 3, 6, 9

Good fats, especially Omega 3's. Just an all around good supplement that fights and supports so much of your body. Great for weight loss.

L-Glutamine

Great for building muscle, recovery, and the immune system. Most protein powders contain Glutamine and other amino acids.

Final Thoughts

Yes, it looks like a lot of supplements and it's not always cheap acquire, but it does help with the weight loss, muscle growth, recovery, and overall health. Do understand that supplements are not a magic pill. You could take all the supplements in the world and never see the results you want.

The secret lies in the foods you eat and the activity you take. Supplements are simply a way to help facilitate your current activity and reach your goals.

I hope this information has been helpful. Let me know how I can help you further.

  • If your food is too bland, add some spices like: Ginger, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  • Only use Truvia as a sweetener. No sugar!
  • Use cooking spray to coat pans. Avoid oils of any kind.

Supplements

In the beginning of the 12-week program, Kris provided a list of supplements that he recommended we take. However, as the weeks went by, he either mentioned or listed additional items along with tips on how to take them. This section attempts to remain as close to the supplement stack mentioned on the web and during his videos.

With that written, I have provided pictures of specific products that I am using throughout the transformation. As an example, where Kris mentions multivitamins, I have introduced GNC's Mega Man Sport. In an effort to remain as transparent as possible, I will do my best to identify where I have selected one product over another. For now, please know that the pictures provided below are my own.

Pre-Cardio Supplements

Kris Gethin 12-Week Body Transformation Pre-Cardio Supplements
  • Green Tea
  • Yohimbe
  • L-Carnitine
  • Black Coffee
Purpose: The purpose of this supplement stack is to help maximize your fat burning activities. By doing cardio immediately after waking up in the morning, the activity will produce greater results since your body has been fasting all night long. To support your cardio session, the body will tap into fat reserves, which is exactly what we want.

Timing: The recommended time to take this stack on an empty stomach at least an hour before cardio.

Pre-Workout Supplements

Kris Gethin 12-Week Body Transformation Pre-Workout Supplements
  • Green Tea
  • Glutamine
  • Creatine
  • Carbohydrate
Purpose: The purpose of this stack is to prepare your body for a rigorous session in the gym.

Timing: This stack should be taken at least an hour before your workout. Also, consider eating a meal before the session as you will need the energy to make it through weight training.

Post-Workout Supplements

Kris Gethin 12-Week Body Transformation Post-Workout Supplements
  • Whey Isolate Protein
  • Glutamine
  • Creatine
  • Carbohydrate
Purpose: The purpose of this stack is to feed your exhausted muscles with essential nutrients. Much of what we're taking has been used up during the workout.

Timing: This stack should be consumed within 10 minutes of your weight training, but before the second cardio session.

My Progress

As with any body transformation, people want to know how well a program works. I believe everything works if you work it. You get out of a program what you put into it. No work, no rewards!

In this section, I keep a running tally of my own journey. Each week (around Monday), I will return to this area to update both my measurements as well as photos.

Kris Gethin's 12 Week Body Transformation: Day 7 (July 27, 2014)

Welcome! It has been a few months since my last update and I'm excited about getting back on track during the next 12 weeks. In this post, I want to provide my current body measurements and photos. This way, as we progress through the transformation, we all will have a way to compare my progress. Shall we begin?

Body Measurements

Weight: 215.8 lbs (-8.2 lbs)
Body Fat: 19% (guesstimating)
Waist: 38.5" (no change)
Neck: 15.5" (+0.25")
Chest: 40" (-1")
Hips: 42" (+0.25)
Thigh: 24.5" (-0.50")
Calves: 17" (-0.50")
Biceps: 16" (-0.25")
Shoulders: 48.5" (-1")
Stomach: 39.5" (-1.25")
Upper Stomach: 35.5" (+0.25")
Body Fat Mass: 41 lbs
Lean Body Mass: 175 lbs
Target Weight (6% Body Fat): 185 lbs

In reviewing the numbers, the most notable areas of change between December 10, 2013 and today appears to be with my body weight, stomach, shoulders, and chest. While almost all body parts have reduced in size, I find it interesting to see where the fat (and I'm sure some muscle) are greatly being reduced. Watching a reduction from my stomach, which is a huge problem area, is a welcomed sight.

Another change worth discussing is the one related to my body fat percentage. In the past, I used a fat caliper to measure percentages. I believe that I have been using the tool incorrectly, whereby giving inaccurate data. So, for the time being, I am simply going to use a visual comparison (as provided by Bodybuilding.com).

Photo Gallery

...
Instead of trying to post body transformation pictures individually on the page, I am going to use Google's Picasa Web to share images. Assume that the smaller and tighter I get, the more recent the photo. Cool?

As I compare the most recent pictures, taken this morning, to the ones taken back in December 2013, I notice very few changes. I am not surprised since I took some time off between transformations. Thankfully, I didn't lose too many gains during my time away. In the coming weeks, I'm looking forward to a continued reduction in my stomach area along with more muscle definition.

Closing Thoughts

To my friends and family who tell me that I'm "skinny enough," hopefully you see where I am trying to attack the fat. While wearing clothes, I probably look fine, but when I remove all masks, you can see the truth. I have some work to do.

My most immediate goals are to reduce fat, show some well-defined muscles, and then eventually put some mass back on these bones. It is definitely a process, but one I am excited to adopt.

For those who want to follow along with my daily workouts and measurements, I am using BodySpace, a community over on bodybuilding.com. Follow this link to see my profile. Feel free to send me a friend request if you want.

As far as eating and supplements, I am doing pretty much the same thing as before, with the exception of my vitapak. Instead of GNC's Mega Men Sport Vitapak, I am now using GNC's GenetixHD Elite Physique Vitapak. I may do a review on the new stack once I've had a chance to use it for a while.

Should you have any questions or want to talk about the transformation thus far, please leave me a comment in the section below.

Until next time...

Kris Gethin's 12-Week Transformation: Week 6

It has been about two weeks since my last update and I'm pretty excited about the changes so far. In this post, I'll update my body measurements, share the latest pictures, and talk about any other observations that I may have since week 4. Let's get started.

Body Measurements

This week, I am comparing body measurements from November 26 and December 10. In review of the table below, I notice the greatest differences are measured on my waist, hips, and upper stomach. Even before I knew the numbers, my pants told the story. Shoot, my whole wardrobe needs to be replaced. At this point, I can no longer wear any of my suits. They are just too big. Soon, I'm going to need new khaki pants, jeans, and most of my button up shirts. It's a GREAT problem to have.

Secondary improvements are found on my neck, upper arm, chest, stomach, and weight. Interestingly, the scale has gone as high as 229 lbs during week 5 back to 224 lbs this week. I blame the dramatic fluctuations on adding salt into my diet while also cutting back on water. I read somewhere that drinking too much water was not good for our kidneys. I'm not sure what was going through my head, but it cost me a few pounds on the scale. Nevertheless, I have removed the sodium and went back to drinking a gallon of water per day.

Over the next 7 days, I would like to get my weight under 220 lbs. Hopefully, with the increase in cardio (25 minutes per session), higher intensity workouts, change in supplements, and increased water consumption, I can make this happen. We'll just have to wait and see.

Visual Inspection

Ok, so it's been about 3 weeks since my last photo shoot. For a visual comparison between my earlier progress and today, I'll add pictures from week 6. You may also notice that I've added some pictures where I am not posing. This will give you a greater appreciation for my current status. Needless to say, there is progress, but I still have work to do.

In looking at the photos, the word for this week is "slender." I notice that my body appears to have lengthened. No, I'm not getting any taller, but as my stomach slowly shrinks, my abdomen looks longer. I like that.

While I am appreciative of the changes, I have to call attention to my stomach area. Unfortunately, it's not going away fast enough. Sure, it is shrinking, as noted in the body measurements, but it's just shrinking at a snail's pace.

Understandably, the stomach, for men, is usually the last thing to go. Knowing this, I just have to be patient and consistent. If I keep doing what I'm doing, it will get addressed, eventually.

Final Thoughts

Having discussed my results above, let's talk about some of other changes that I have made since week 3.

First, Kris added BCAA's (Branched Chain Amino Acids) to the supplementation list. According to the literature, this will help protect our lean muscle mass. As I continue to cut fat, the body is looking for other sources of energy, which includes our muscles. Using BCAA's, we can protect our muscles from being broken down while encouraging the body to continue using our fat storage. That's pretty important if you ask me.

Second, I have upgraded my thermogenics to include GNC's Meta-Ignite instead of the triple green tea. While the green tea worked, I wanted to get maximum results and felt this product would do that. I tried it this morning, without any coffee, and I could feel the energy within the hour. Truth be told, I'm still feeling the effects 6 hours later. Wow!

As far as following the workout plan, I've stuck to it as outlined. This week, Kris seriously upped the intensity of our weight training and I feel it. From supersets to giant sets, my heart is racing the entire time. Unfortunately, I have still missed a few cardio sessions in the evening. Typically, I'm running behind schedule and I'll need to get out of the gym. To improve, I just need to focus on my schedule and stick to what's written.

As week 6 comes to a close, I have two more weight training days ahead. I realize that I have accomplished so much in just 6 weeks, but I also know that I'm only half way through the transformation. This fact leaves me excited and anticipating the continued improvements. It's been way too long since I've seen a flat stomach and I know that it's coming soon.

"Thank you!" to all of my friends who are supporting me. It really means a lot. People are noticing the changes and it just feels good. If I can do this for my body, what else can I do? What else can YOU do?

Until next time...

Kris Gethin's 12-Week Body Transformation: Week 4

Happy Tuesday! I'm officially in week 5 now, but I wanted to take this opportunity to report on my Monday morning weigh-in.

In this post, I'll share my official body measurements, give you an update on my meals, and offer a perspective on how I'm feeling during the transformation process. Ready? Let's go!

Body Measurements

Week four resulted in some pretty positive changes. The most obvious change was a loss of 3 pounds. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy about the progress, but I thought I'd be a bit further. I write that because a little over a week ago, I made it down to 223 pounds, which is something I haven't seen since. That's what I get for eating the small bag of chips, huh?

Along with the weight loss, I have also noticed a reduction in the waist, neck, hips, and body fat percentage. Clearly, my stomach, which is the worst offender, will be the last thing to go.

Meals

During week three, I made a mistake and ate a few small bags of potato chips. I felt really bad about it, so I have been pretty strict about not missing a meal and that seems to help with the cravings.

I'm eating about 5-6 meals a day, getting my multivitamins and supplements in, drinking nearly a gallon of water, and consuming both the pre and post-workout shakes.

A couple of small changes this week. The first one is this, I'm eating my eggs, oats, coffee, and consuming fat burners before the morning cardio session. The difference being that I used to eat breakfast after the cardio. However, I noticed that Kris would eat first, so I made the change to match his leadership.

Second, I'm keeping a very close eye on how often that I'm eating. At this point, I'm eating every 2-3 hours. Sometimes, I'm just not all that hungry. So, I graze.

Meals consist of broccoli, chicken, steak, brown rice, water, multivitamins, supplements, and protein shakes.

Other Observations

While I am excited about the weight loss and change in numbers, I have to admit that I just feel tired and exhausted a lot of the time. There are those moments where I'm beaming with energy, but at other times, especially around the afternoon, I'm just dragging. I kid you not, I felt like taking a nap, which is something rarely do.

As far as sleep goes, I'm getting somewhere between 5 to 6.5 hours of sleep a night, which feels like plenty in the morning.

With regards to my energy in the gym, I have enough to blast it, but I just thought I'd share that with you. It could mean nothing or something, I just don't know.

So, that's about it for now. I'll keep you posted on my progress, but I'm excited to hear about what you're doing. I've received a number of messages from people who have jumped on board. What's the experience like for you so far? Let's talk in the comment section below.

Until next time...

Kris Gethin's 12-Week Body Transformation: Supplements

At the start of the transformation, I provided the meal and supplement plan as outlined by Kris Gethin. However, as the weeks went by, Kris began sharing additional nuggets of information related to supplements and when to take them. This post attempts to share what I know.

Pre-Cardio Supplements

  • Green Tea

Observation: Thanks to the amount of caffeine I'm consuming in this stack, I definitely feel the surge of energy in the morning. Outside of that, I cannot tell you how effective or ineffective the other products are, but I have been losing weight and dropping inches. Is that caused by my increased activity level, supplements, or all the above? For now, I am going to continue taking them because I am seeing results and that right now is all that matters.

Pre-Workout Supplements

  • Green Tea
  • Glutamine
  • Creatine
  • Carbohydrate
Purpose: The purpose of this stack is to prepare your body for a rigorous session in the gym.

Timing: This stack should be taken at least an hour before your workout. Also, consider eating a meal before the session as you will need the energy to make it through weight training.

Observation: The caffeine definitely helps in the afternoon/evening as it helps kickstart the workout. The creatine, carbs, and glutamine are helpful in getting through the session. After the first week, I haven't really experienced the soreness or down time I'd normally have during such a grueling working. I give credit here.

Post-Workout Supplements

  • Whey Isolate Protein
  • Glutamine
  • Creatine
  • Carbohydrate
Purpose: The purpose of this stack is to feed your exhausted muscles with essential nutrients. Much of what we're taking has been used up during the workout.

Timing: This stack should be consumed within 10 minutes of your weight training, but before the second cardio session.

Observation: I believe this stack has helped refuel my body. I can't say that I feel any different afterwards, but muscle soreness hasn't been a problem. Is that just the way it is or is it affected by these supplements? I'm not sure, but I am getting stronger and recovery seems to be shorter.

Closing Thoughts

Prior to this latest transformation, I was adamantly against taking so many supplements. One, I didn't understand them and two, I didn't want to hurt myself taking the wrong stuff.

In following Kris' advice and leadership, I haven't experienced any negative side effects. I have plenty of energy, I'm losing weight, and getting stronger in the process.

The only other concern that affected my decision in the past was how expensive this stuff can be. During my first visit to GNC, I've spent over $120 acquiring the essentials. When you add six meals a day, plus supplements, and other related costs, it's not the cheapest endeavor. However, I asked myself, "Is it worth it?" Do I want to continue carrying around excess weight? Do I want to continue paying for blood pressure medication? Do I want to maintain this on-going risk of heart disease, stroke, or diabetes? The answer to all three questions is, "NO!"

Pay it now or pay it later, but one way we're going to pay. I just choose to sacrifice my money for improved health, vitality, and an overall success story today, not tomorrow.

Kris Gethin's 12-Week Body Transformation: Week 3

It has been a few weeks since my last post, so I figured it was time to update you on the progress I've made in between weeks two and three. In this post, I plan to share my complete measurements and offer a few pictures to boot. So, without further ado, let's get started.

Body Measurements

One of the things that I regret not doing was taking my measurements and pictures prior to starting the transformation. It wasn't until week three that I finally got on my game. With that written, let me preface this section by saying that the last time I measured my progress was back in December of 2012. So, for this exercise, I'll take those numbers as some form of comparison, but just keep that in mind as you review the stats.

Body Part December Today Difference
Weight 248.4 lbs 228 lbs -20 lbs
Waist 42.5 inches 39.5 inches -3 inches
Neck 16.25 inches 15.5 inches -0.75 inches
Hips 45.25 inches 43 inches -2 inches
Thigh 26 inches 25 inches 1 inch
Calf 16 inches 17.5 inches +1.5 inches
Bicep 16.75 inches 16 inches -0.75 inches
Body Fat % 20.2% 14.8% -5.4%
Chest TBA 41.5 inches TBA
Stomach TBA 41 inches TBA
Upper Stomach TBA 36 inches TBA
Shoulders TBA 50 inches TBA
Lean Body Mass 204 lbs 194 lbs -10 lbs
Body Fat Mass 51.5 lbs 33.7 lbs -17.8 lbs

Note: I was unable to secure December measurements for my chest, stomach, upper stomach, and shoulders. However, based on the trends, imagine that they were probably a larger number.

As you can see from the table, the transformation is working. To be fair, I began the 12 weeks weighing about 238 pounds. Additionally, my weight hit its lowest point of 223 pounds during week 3. Unfortunately, when it came time to weigh in, I was about 5 pounds heavier. This variance could be due to the time of day that I weighed myself (evening) and the amount of water I consumed (nearly a gallon). Moving forward, I plan to take measurements before my morning cardio session, which tends to be my lightest weight of the day.

Visual Inspection

During week three, I decided to finally post some actual pictures of my progress. Like my measurements posted above, I didn't begin this transformation with a set of before pictures. So, I found a few images from my July 16, 2010 photo session and decided that I'd start there.

At first glance, you can see that I've lost mass in the shoulder, neck, back, and chest areas. It's most likely a loss of both muscle and fat. At the very least, I can summarize it to say that I'm slimming up and becoming a more lean, mean, fat burning machine.

Looking at my back, I can see more definition and the location where cuts will eventually shine through. My waist is getting smaller and I'm just carrying less fat around. Those are really good indicators. Not to forget that I've also had to buy smaller pants as everything I own is just too big.

I would be remiss if I didn't share with you another initial reaction that I had after looking at these pictures. The most memorable gasp came upon the front shot. I immediately said, "OMGoodness, I look sick!" My face looks so much skinnier and my upper body too small. Eeck!

On the bright side, I suspected that this was going to happen. With over a decade of carrying extra baggage, I knew that I'd lose both muscle and fat. It's the price that I was willing to pay for a healthy body. In saying that, just know that when I reach my goal, I'm putting a whole bunch of muscle on these bones. Lose the fat, keep as much lean muscle as I can, and then apply mass. That's the plan!

Final Thoughts

In reviewing the past few weeks of this transformation, I have been receiving tons of supporting comments and questions about what I am doing to lose the weight. I am so appreciative of the attention, but know that I am just getting started. There is still so much more work to do and heavy loads to lift. What I am doing, anyone can do. They just have to want it bad enough to get outside of their comfort zone and make the difference.

With that written, let me report that I have done a fairly good job of eating and working out according to the plan. Unfortunately, I have to also tell you that I've missed about four cardio sessions and gone off the meal plan to include parmesan cheese over my fish, feta cheese by itself, and two bags of chips. I'm not proud of it, but it's the truth. I also bought some whole grain noodles and added it to my diet, Kris said it was ok, but I immediately saw my weight shoot back up from 223 to 228 lbs. I stopped not long after.

Over the next week, my goal is to focus on making every cardio session as outlined in the transformation. Immediately out of bed, I'm hitting the stairs for 20 minutes of cardio.

In addition, I am going to write more often about my transformation and the lessons that I'm learning. I find that waiting an entire week is just too long.

Well, I think that's about it for now. Again, thank you for the support and return visits. If you have questions, comments, or just want to talk about the process, let's do it in the comment section below.

I'm Down 54 Pounds And Counting...

Growing up, I always thought of myself as a pretty healthy kid. With each doctor visit, the family physician would announce my good bill of health. It became such a common occurrence that I just expected it.

Of course, I can't take all the credit. My mother, who was known for her healthy meals, made sure that we ate a balanced diet. There were always colorful vegetables, lean meats, and complex carbohydrates. As a kid, I didn't like it, but have since learned to appreciate her investment in my overall health.

It Began Here...

I was around 17 or 18 when I first realized that I was gaining weight. By this time, I had moved out of my mothers house and began eating whatever I wanted. I had a preference for noodles, hamburger, cheese, pizza, chips, and ice cream. When I got into college, I had my fair share of Chinese food, too.

At first, the weight didn't bother me. That was until it affected my speed on the track field and bumped me up to the unlimited class in wrestling. I wasn't ready for that kind of change.

Over the next 15-20 years, I wrestled with managing a healthy weight. Each year, I would promise myself that this was the year I'd lose weight, gain muscle, or get a six pack set of abs. I went from 180 lbs all the way up to 280 lbs at my highest point.

In my mind, I kept telling myself that I wasn't that bad. I had muscles and they weighed more than fat.

I was in denial.

While I may not have been "obese," at least that's how I described it, I was definitely not in shape. I did not have the body that I wanted.

The Bad News...Dum...Dum...Dum

A few years ago, while visiting the doctor, I was first alerted to my pre-hypertension state. It began with headaches. I thought that the headaches were related to allergies, so I started taking over-the-counter medication for it and cleaning my sinuses with a Neti Pot. None of it worked.

After a visit to the doctor, he explained that my blood pressure was higher than normal and needed to be watched. He gave me some tips on how I could lower my numbers and I successfully brought it back down.

Unfortunately, I let myself go again and it went back into the pre-hypertension phase. This time, I couldn't lower the number. I took out the salt from my diet, started working out again, and just made an attempt to do better. Nothing worked. So, the good doctor put me on Lisinopril, a blood pressure medication.

My question to the doctor was, how long do I have to be on these things? He responded that it depends on me. Either my genetics will determine that answer or my lifestyle.

With high blood pressure comes increased risk for heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, and any number of ailments. None of which I wanted anything to do with.

Enough Is Enough!

In my mind, I knew that I could lose the weight. If genetics was not against me, I promised myself that I would do what it takes to get off these pills and get back to my best self. At the time, I probably weighed somewhere between 245-253 lbs.

In the past, I had successfully dropped nearly 30 pounds just by eating differently and doing cardio. I knew that I could do it.

Slowly, I worked my weight down to about the mid-230's, with an occasional dip that wouldn't last. I knew that I had to raise the bar if I was ever going to break the plateau. Enter Kris Gethin and the 12 week transformation.

"Follow the leadership!" That's the message that brought me to Kris Gethin's digital door. If I wanted what he and others had, a nice body, then I needed to do what those people are doing. In other words, follow the leadership.

While I knew enough to lose 40+ pounds, I wanted to totally transform my body.

As I write this, I am really only three weeks in to a twelve week program. However, I can say that I have some great news to report. First, through this program, I have finally reached 226 lbs on the scale. Do you know how long it has been since I've seen 226 pounds? I would say well over a decade.

Second, and this is huge, my blood pressure has been registering NORMAL for the past few weeks. That is a win in my book. While it may be a bit premature to announce that I'm able to get off the blood pressure medication, I can say that this program has helped me reduce my numbers into a healthy range. For that, I am extremely thankful and inspired. If I can get down to 226 lbs and earn a normal blood pressure, which I did, I know that even more awesome things are in store.

With that being written, I would like to thank Kris for his leadership. It is because of his 12 week video training program that I have a deeper understanding for nutrition, supplements, and physical training. Not only that, but he has helped me see how one can overcome objections (no time, too many meetings, travel too much, etc.). If you're a leader, you'll find a way.

Along with Kris, I would also like to thank YOU for supporting me. For every compliment, encouragement, share, and like, I know that you are out there rooting for me. However, I think it's also important to note that if I can do it, so can YOU. If you're tired of doing the same thing and getting the same results, step out on faith and get involved. Find a leader that has what you want and do what they do. It won't always be easy and you won't always feel like doing it, but in the end it'll be worth it. Trust me!

So, that's it, guys. I wanted to take a moment and share my story with you. If you're interested in doing what I'm doing, make sure you visit Kris Gethin's program. If he's not for you, there are plenty of other trainers who are available to help you (at no cost).

Remember, you're not in this thing alone. We're in this together! So, get up, get out, and do something. Don't let another minute pass you by.

Until next time...
